An earlier tee off time today for the boys and Mark and Mikey were on the first tee at 9am. Unfortunately Jack was unwell today which meant that there was a slight change in playing order. Only six boys played for the team today and the reserves took part in a separate Stableford competition where Craig had a great game and had a brilliant score of 33 points. Results are still to be confirmed.
Leigh and Brad both had great starts with a birdie on the first, but Mark lost a ball on the second hole and went one down. Mikey hits over the par five green third hole in two shots.
On the fourth Brad has a great shot to the par 3 fourth hole and sinks the two foot putt for another birdie. At the same hole Aberdare sinks a long putt to go one up against Leigh. Eddie also hits the green but 3 putts to half the game.
The boys are giving away a lot of shots today, Eddie the most with 9. Leigh was also giving away six shots and Mikey and Mark 4 and 3 respectively.
The weather was kind up to the fourteenth when the sun disappeared behind the gathering clouds and a chilly wind began gusting around. Spectators put coats on and the sandal wearers amongst us wished they had worn their trainers!
On the tricky par 3 sixth hole, a real test of nerve, Leigh putts in for a three to win the hole. Both Leigh and Brad parred this hole but Rory hit the hazard and had to go back and play off the tee. He then had a great shot to the green but it wasn't enough to win the hole and he remained level.
Up ahead in the first game Mark is level and Mikey is one down after six holes. However fortunes change quickly on this course and by the tenth Mark is two up, Mikey one up, Rory level, Leigh one down, Brad one up and Eddie level. Still all to play for.
On the short dog length twelfth Brad and Eddie both win to go one up and two up respectively. On the fourteenth, the long par 5 with a daunting drive Brad and Eddie turned the screw with great drives to put their opponents under pressure. Both Aberdare players put their balls out of bounds. Eddie could see victory in his sights and he hit his second ball to the green and his match was conceded by his opponent on the fifteenth.
Meanwhile Rory continued to sneak ahead to 2 up but unfortunately Leigh went 3 down and lost his game on the sixteenth 4 and 2. Mikey was 1 up with 2 to play and ended his game on a half. Mark won on the 17th two up and only the final hole to play. So, Turnhouse have two winners and a half with two players still to finish.
Rory was one up going on the seventeenth and his opponent hit an excellent drive close to the green. However Rory, who was giving away 2 shots, played first and had a signature chip to four feet from the hole. His opponent chipped over the green to the bunker, played out and missed the putt which gave Rory two putts to win. He only needed one and stuck it away for a birdie to win the match to the great excitement from the crowd.
The final match with Bradley went to the eighteenth and his opponent hit his tee shot to around 8 feet from the hole. Bradley responded with a tee shot just off the green close to a tree. Bradley played first and duly chipped onto the green, it kept running and was holed for a two! A huge cheer from the clubhouse area where a sizeable crowd had assembled. Well done Brad. His opponent missed his putt so Bradley won his match too, really amazing as he was giving away 7 shots. All in all, a good day out for the boys, and slightly shorter today at only six and a half hours.
Final score Turnhouse 4 1/2 Aberdare 1 1/2
