Blue skies and perfect conditions greeted the Turnhouse team this morning when they arrived at the golf course. They had been drawn against the Irish team, Mallow who hail from Cork and have promised any Turnhouse member a free game if they are ever in the area. Quick, get the bus booked now!
The first pair off were Mark and Jack at around 10am followed by Mikey and Rory, then Leigh and Bradley. Eddie and Craig played as reserves today.
Conditions were calm at first but then the wind quickly picked up and was gusty on some parts of the course which made club selection crucial. The first pair played well although both were giving away shots on handicaps to their opponents, but the games finished up with Jack losing 5 and 4 and Mark losing 2 and 1 on the 17th,
Meanwhile Leigh finished his game early at 4 and 3 and Brad sunk a ten foot putt on the sixteenth to clinch the match 3 and 2,
Mikey and Rory were making headway in the wind and by the the 8th hole Mikey was 3 up and Rory 2 up. Team Captain Mikey continued in the vein and also won on the sixteenth 3 and 2. By this point Rory had gone back to to 1 down going on to the 18th and would have to win the hole to half his match. Rory managed this in spectacular style by executing a lovely chip and run from around twelve feet to birdie the 18th and put pressure on his opponent who missed his putt to end that match all square. This meant that Turnhouse won the overall game 3 1/2 to 2 1/2. It was an intense match overall and Mallow played very well.
The reserve games ended with Eddie all square after 18 and Craig unfortunately losing 7 and 6.
Well done to all the boys, it was a long day with most of the matches lasting in the region of 7 hours. Lunch was had at 5pm!
Second round tomorrow playing against Aberdare from Wales.
