Blue skies and sunshine greeted the boys today as they took on Maesteg from Wales today (also a James Braid course). The boys were announced off the first tee with the team comprising Mark and Jack, Mikey and Rory, Leigh and Craig with Ben and Matthew playing in the reserve game.
Mark took the first 2 holes but he was giving 5 shots to his opponent it was always going to be tough. He was all square through the first 6 holes but then from 7 to the 12th he went 2 down. He won the 13th but then lost the 14th. However, a late comeback saw Mark courageously claw his way back to all square by the 16th. Mark was 1 down going on to the 18th and put his tee shot to 6' and as his opponent 3 putted to half the match.
Jack was 2 down after the first 2 holes but by 6 he was all square again. He had the most amazing shot at the 13th where he chipped in over the water on to the green, 2 bounces on to the green for a birdie 3! The game was so tense and close - a really tough match as he was down for most of the game. Giving 8 shots to his opponent was never going to be easy. However on the 18th he sunk a tricky downhill putt to win the match.
Mikey was under the cosh for most of the round as he gave 7 shots away and was 2 down with 5 to play. His perseverance turned things around on the 17th to go 1 up and won the 18th as well just for good measure to win 2 up. Mikey's opponent is the Welsh Under 14 Team Captain and has a short game to die for!
Rory was giving away 5 shots and was 1 up on the 14th in a very close game. He parred 15, and then on the 16th had a lovely curving putt that raised a cheer from the crowd. Another win on the 17th secured the match 2 and 1.
Leigh won 6 and 5, playing very steady, putting his opponent under pressure from the outset and he won on the 13th. The match continued to a handsome win for Leigh as on the 18th he was 8 holes up.
Craig had a ding dong battle with his opponent and he was 1 down after 10 and then turned it round on 12 and from there on there was no looking back. He had a brilliant shot on the 6th hole par 3, spun the ball back to about 4' and sunk the putt for a birdie. He closed out the game on the 16th to win 3 and 2.
Matthew and Ben played in the reserve matches with Matthew winning 9 and 7 and Ben winning by 1 hole to finish off a great day for the Turnhouse Juniors with a 5 1/2 win against a very skillful and tough team. Well done to all!
